Overview: The objective of this program is to learn how to more effectively manage your role and the expectations for your position. To move forward as a leader, you need to manage relationships effectively: first with yourself, then with the person you report to, then with all those you serve, including your team. This program will help you learn to focus your time, energy, and resources to provide value and create results for your organization by better understanding how to engage your team in committing to those results. Participants will learn how to build supportive relationships and greatly increase their team’s capacity for change, improved results and productivity.

Session #1 - To kick off the program we work through the requirements for effectively managing your role – the expectations for your position. We assess where you are right now with your current work – are you too challenged, not challenged enough, or just challenged to make it right? We look at how to make the most of your role, position yourself for next steps, and see where you need to grow. To move forward, you also need to manage relationships effectively. The first relationship to manage is the one with your supervisor – we all have one, they have expectations, and we often do not link what they need with what we need. One of the session exercises will provide great insight for you in terms of understanding your supervisor and how to work more effectively together.

Session #2 - Mistakenly, many people promoted to leadership positions assume that authority will naturally flow from your role and others will respect your title and fall in line with your objectives. Nothing could be farther from the truth and, most importantly, it is getting even further from the reality of leadership as our society moves to a much more collaborative model. To effectively develop and cultivate relationships with peers, colleagues, and those outside your organization you need to develop an approach for networking, using influence to build rapport, and communicating in ways that connects to your audience. In this session, we work through exercises to support building a network for a bigger future and connect the right way with the right people.

Session #3 - One of the critical roles of the leader is to effectively build and manage a team to execute against expectations for outcomes. Yet, this is the single greatest derailment factor for most people promoted to leadership positions – and the factor most often assessed as hurting employee engagement and productivity. Supporting the performance of your team is a key element to your success as a leader. In this session we work through the stages of building and leading an effective team.

Session #4 - More and more, we are moving to a team-based work environment and as leaders, we need to understand how to balance the need to both support the performance of individuals on the team while at the same time bringing people together to work collaboratively as a team. Leaders are responsible for the performance of their teams and one skill most needed to create the right environment to engage people is coaching. In our final session, we work through the various factors that you as a leader can use to provide what is needed for your team to be engaged, contribute meaningfully, and provide excellent performance.
