Teaching Debrief: The Importance of Self-Assessment as an Educator (CLT)

This session is hosted by the Centre for Learning and Teaching.

Date: Wednesday, February 28, 2018
Time: 12:00 to 1:30 PM
Location: Killam Library, Room B400

Throughout our day-to-day teaching, it can be difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of our teaching practices. Students Rating of Instruction (SRIs) are one way to gain feedback on our teaching, but may be impacted by other elements such as class size, student personalities, or students’ own learning goals. The objectives of students and educators don’t always align, which makes it difficult to rely fully on SRIs for a review of our teaching effectiveness and development. For example, we may prioritize the delivery of our teaching through approaches that make sense to us, but may not match the needs and requirements of our learners. While it is important that we obtain a strong sense of self as a teacher, we must also have the ability to independently critique our own individual successes and challenges beyond our SRI data.

In this session we will discuss strategies in evaluating our own teaching, and the value of doing so, especially for teaching assistants. How can we gauge students’ perceptions toward our teaching practices, and, once we identify problems, how do we effectively manage them? We will conduct informal group discussions and activities to address these challenges. By the end of the session, participants should have a greater preparedness for the evaluation and improvement of their teaching effectiveness.
